Local Lunchbox Round-Up

Collections of Colonies of Bees by Kat Berger

Every weekday, Local Lunchbox focuses on the tasty, local audio treats, we, at WMSE have stashed on our awesome library shelves. Faux Eyes, Erin, Melissa, Dori and Buzz spin local rock, pop,  experimental, country, hip hop, metal, noise and garage tunes to keep you, the listener, on the up and up about your old favorites and new pals.

Here’s the roster for this week (note: Wednesday, WMSE was off-air during Local Lunchbox) :

Monday, November 16th, Faux Eyes:

Fable & the World Flat, Matt Meixner, Volcano Choir, the Candeliers, the Reckless Hearts

Tuesday, November 17th, Erin:

Father Phoenix, John the Savage, Collections of Colonies of Bees, Volcano Choir

Thursday, November 19th, Dori:

The Barrettes, Pezzettino, ifIHadAHifi

Friday, November 20th, Buzz:

The Etiquette, The Flips, Skiptracer

This week’s highlighted group is experimental outfit, Collections of Colonies of Bees. The Milwaukee band is in between two shows this week: one took place at Bay View’s Cactus Club last evening and their next is scheduled for The Borg Ward (823 W. National) on Saturday. Collections of Colonies of Bees’ experimental post-rock has roots in classical, electro-pop and math rock, but refuses to be defined by any of these genres. The band’s recent joining up with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon to form the Volcano Choir has put them in the national limelight.

In a recent interview with Pitchfork as Volcano Choir, the group name-dropped local bands, showing devotion to their own hometown scene. Saturday, they play the Borg Ward along with like-minded experimental acts canyonsofstatic, This Specific Dream, Concentric and Coelacanth for a unique, local post-rock showcase. 6 p.m. All-ages.
