Hey, young world. Get your downloading fingers ready. Because you have until September 15 to get these BRAND NEW DJ SHADOW SONGS FOR FREE.
(Yes, all-caps is necessary. That’s how I let you know I’m using my “outside” voice. And DJ Shadow is definitely cause for using one’s outside voice. )
“Def Surrounds Us” is seven minutes and thirty-eight cinematic seconds of drums, chimes, blips, claps and vocal samples that Shadow mutilates into an electro/dub-step step-child. And representing the complete opposite end of the spectrum, “I’ve Been Trying” shows up with soulful vocals, mellow acoustic guitar strumming, and soft scratching in the background for what is, essentially, a three-minute sad song.
Two totally different musical styles on the same album? Classic Shadow.
Again, these are free until September 15. (Click here.) Then you’ll have to buy them. Which, I know, is crazy for some of you. But try it. You’ll like it.
And despite “The New Futility” appearing at the top of this single, Shadow insists the forthcoming new album is still untitled.
