Collections of Colonies of Bees is back with its new lineup (Ben Derickson and Nicholas Sanborn), trading drummers and keys players over the span of the last year, ready to bring their much-lauded post-rock masterpieces back to the stage of Milwaukee’s Cactus Club this weekend. The Bees’ most recent release, GIVING (Hometapes) is as packed to the brim as a four-song album can possibly be with its complex percussional rhythms and alert and playful keys and guitars. Dusted says, ” This is post-rock on the louder side of the genre, laced with the occasional minimalist flourish and tipping its hat to [Rhys] Chatham’s sinewy guitar-centric compositions from the 1970s and ’80s. It’s a sometimes contradictory work: a bold, dense album that’s over and done with in less than half an hour.” Let’s see what a new lineup will bring to these songs and possibly (?) new material? Local DJ He Can Jog (Erik Schoster) starts the process, diving in with his own version of one of those tracks from GIVING — “Vorms”. Listen to both versions and catch the Bees this Saturday at the Cactus Club (2496 S. Wentworth) as they share the stage with Minneapolis experimental folk rockers, Peter Wolf Crier. 10pm/21+
