Just because it’s the weekend, doesn’t mean WMSE closes up shop. We’ve got two great in-studio treats for you who think that radio rules and keep it tuned to 91.7 FM, 24-7.
Today: tune in at 5 p.m. on WMSE’s Blues Drive to listen to Jon Langford and Paul Burch whoop it up on the airwaves, slinging nothing but their guitars and vocal chords as a little precursor to their gig tonight at the Cactus Club. They just released a new album together as the “Waco Brothers & Paul Burch” on Chicago’s Bloodshot Records, and tonight they celebrate one hour north, alongside Milwaukee’s Hugh Bob & the Hustle.
Tomorrow: after you check into WMSE’s Buy Local Bazaar, check your ears into WMSE for a live set from JD McPherson and his solid backing band of Jimmy Sutton on upright bass and Alex Hall on the kit. This art teacher turned guitarist and crooner is the real deal, summoning the spirit of Little Richard and James Brown in his Rounder Records release, Signs and Signifiers. McPherson performs on WMSE tomorrow at 4 p.m. and WMSE DJ Good John (who brings you tunes on the Chicken Shack when Jonny Z isn’t holding down the fort) will be the host du heure, talking to McPherson and co. as they ready themselves for a performance at Shank Hall later that evening. Listen/watch the video for “North Side Gal”, here.
