Canadian duo Purity Ring are artists at the core – Megan James (vocals) and Corin Roddick (beats and sound manipulations) built their own lighting and sound setup for their live performances and James currently not only creates their show garb, but also unwittingly created the lyrics that line their forthcoming release, Shrines [4AD Records], taken from her earlier creative scribblings, never intending them to become musical lyrics.
Those particular lyrics are filled with twisted mysticism and haunting imagery, fitting her forthright yet spritely voice perfectly, calling behind the shadows of swirling sonics and booming beats. Shrines easilyholds a modern medievality, falling in line with the gauzy sentiments of Cocteau Twins and the modern pop coolness of Policia. Check out two videos for tracks from Shrines below — “Grandloves” and “Belispeak” before the album gets to record stores and everywhere else this Tuesday.
