The Music of Locust Street Festival

Heidi Spencer

Words by Amelinda Burich

This Sunday, the Locust Street Festival of Music and Art returns for it’s 34th year.  The annual Riverwest block party features diverse vendors, food, music, art and the popular 1.8 mile beer run/walk.  There is a slight chance for sprinkles, but the fest is rain or shine, so come prepared and you’ll  be rewarded (you may recall the stellar performance by The Championship of their song “Black Cloud” amidst thunder and lightening at the 2008 Locust Street Festival).

Expect another great local lineup for this year.  Heidi Spencer & the Rare Birds, recently signed to UK label Bella Union, will bring their haunting folk to the Linneman’s outdoor stage.  Spencer delivers intimate lyrics with a wavering but confident, beautifully unsettling voice over perfectly sparse compositions. The group recently performed with labelmates Midlake at Turner Hall.

Rare Bird Matt Hendricks will also be performing as a solo performer on the Klinger’s East stage following another Spencer collaborator, Sigmund Snopek.
