This southeastern Wisconsin quintet is a multi-generational family musical project (four out of the five members are related). the Fell Boyzs have been delivering blistering live sets across the region, and were even nominated for a WAMI in 2005. Blending equal parts jazz, fusion, funk and rock, Zach (saxophone), Kyle (bass, acoustic guitar), Billy (guitar), Chris (guitar) and Tom (drums), the Fell Boyzs bring lots of energy to their live performances. Tom Fell, shortly after the band’s WAMI win, described themselves as “modern jazz”, and their fusion style is a evidence of this description. “Seventy percent of our music is improvisation that we record then compose, improve and change”, Fell adds of the transition between writing/live performance to their recorded material. In an additional interview, Kyle Fell gives a bit of history to his dad’s description and the band’s beginnings, “My dad’s been playing music before we were born…[he also] played [a lot of] Steely Dan and Edgar Winters”. Sounds like multidirectional influences have gotten the Fell Boyzs to where they are today. Catch them this Tuesday at 8 p.m. on WMSE’s Local/Live (91.7 FM or WMSE.org) and on Saturday, August 14th at Gerald’s Smokehouse Restaurant (1501 Washington Avenue) in Racine.
