Listen to J Flash’s songs and therein lies a strange and beautiful cross between the childish simplicity of Daniel Johnston, drawn to flights of fancy, and the ocassional sonic noodlings and elements of Animal Collective, with spacey-y, underwater instrumentation. Flash’s atypical singer/songwriter style utilizes his socially-conscious lyricism and patient songcraft to create songs grounded in sincerity and are often accompanied by various musician friends who fill out Flash’s Mark Kozelek-like acoustic guitar work. Flash’s third album, Know, Alone is an introspective-but-realized mixture of folk, pop and experimental sounds, with thoughtfully-arranged parts. Indie Milwaukee says of the album, “It can foster a personal experience…and at the same time, make the artist stand out in their consciousness'”.
