Banjo can either serve as a raucous tool for stirring up the pot of a wild stomp-up or the mournful companion voice of a songwriter who has the deep tales to tell that require the hopeful, meandering qualities a banjo carries. In regards to the latter, local group Lady Cannon and the Day Stars, a Milwaukee band comprised of Martha and Joe Cannon, Nick Berg and Joe Martinez, take the banjo and use it as much of a foundation instrument as M. Cannon’s vocals, which recall Hope Sandoval [Mazzy Star]. Grounded in somber storytelling, Lady Cannon and the Day Stars’ songs carry a quiet strength that plays on a dark sense of humor, adding a playful sparkle to the depths. The band appears on tonight’s Local/Live at 8 p.m. and is preparing for a string of shows, sharing the stage with Carolina Story at Frank’s Power Plant on Thursday, September 16th and The Bends at Bremen Cafe on Friday September 17th.
