Cedar AV, “Easier”
Eric & Magill, “Old Man Winter”
LMNtlyst, “Fences” (Phoenix remix)
The last few weeks have turned out some of the most fresh and glowing local pop releases; odd timing, perhaps, with winter on its way? Maybe. We just dig the fact that we have some pretty pop to listen to to help soften winter’s impending blow. Think of each of these albums, then, as an equal to the first snowfall of winter: undeniably exhilarating. Fitting enough.
Cozy up to Cedar AV’s newest, At Long Last, featuring collaborators Nathaniel Zabriskie, Erik Schoster and Nicholas Sanborn, and holding hints of early Postal Service’s heartfelt indie-tronica. Warm up to Eric & Magill’s multi-collaborative album (guests include Milwaukee musicians and national musicians from Dirty Projectors and Shearwater) All Those I Know, headed by Ryan Weber and Eric Osterman. All Those I Know comes off as both spacious and thoughtful. Finally, properly ‘chill’ out with the cool, but warmly interpreted, Wolfgang Amadeus Gruvis, local producer and musician LMNtlyst’s take on French pop band Phoenix’s most-recent, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. LMNtlyst adds plenty of subtly funky percussion and guitar-work to move the original album along in a new direction.
All musicians are offering their albums for free at their respective web sites (linked above). Check out our favorite tracks from each, then dig into what just might be your favorite local pop offerings to round out 2010.
