Chicago’s Bear Claw follows in the tradition of its city’s toughest: Haymarket Riot, Shellac, Gauge and the like. Formed in 2002, the trio of Rich Fessler (bass/vocals), Rob Raspolich (bass) and Scott Picco (drums/vocals) has mastered the knack of creating sinewy yet melodic rock music, making good use of their instruments’ filled-out sound qualities, booming and crashing their way through epic, yet punk-spirited anthems.
The band’s latest release, Refuse This Gift [Sickroom Records], annihilates and pummels throughout its ten tracks, in honor of its Chicago roots and paying homage to other local angular revelers, such as Minneapolis’ Stnnng. Their third album recorded in Chicago with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio, Refuse This Gift is powerful and put together, its focus on sync, dynamics and attack.
Check out a track from Refuse This Gift, below, and check out Bear Claw tonight at Club Garibaldi’s [2501 S. Superior] as they play with Milwaukee’s Revolush and Worrier for a 9 p.m./21+ show. Remember when they opened for Shellac at MSOE’s Todd Wehr Hall back in April of 2005? Yeah, we do, too.
