Modern-day troubadours and tale-spinners take note: the house circuit may literally be a good home in addition to traditional venues. The phrase ‘basement show’ might instantaneously pop into one’s head, but consider this simply a close relation in the DIY spirit. A recent article in The NY Times points out that “Opening one’s home to folk and acoustic concerts is a tradition as old as the music itself, harking back to porch jug bands and after-dinner fiddle sessions. But what was once a viable in-between-cities venue for touring musicians has become critical to their sustainability.” The article prominently features Milwaukee’s Lil’ Rev, a well-known folk singer-songwriter and his recent home-performance in Naperville, Illinois.
