Tony Memmel may play straightforward acoustic folk rock with a helping of Americana, but he does it with more than the usual straight-arrow style for more than one reason: Memmel not only uses his upbeat personality to fuel his songs, he also demonstrates a tenacity in his musicianship. Memmel was born missing his left forearm, yet still manages to play guitar, and play it well. In addition to mastering guitar, single-handedly, Memmel also adds his own piano and harmonica playing into the mix. His backing band further tightens up what already is a solid sound from Memmel, reminiscent of the Counting Crows with its heartfelt lyrics and sweet harmonies. Memmel has toured extensively and has made a name for himself outside of Milwaukee — he’s played Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Minneapolis. Catch music by Tony Memmel tonight on WMSE as he plays for tonight’s Local/Live at 8 p.m. [CST]. Tune in at 91.7 FM WMSE or stream online at WMSE.org. Missed out? Listen back in the WMSE archives.
