John McLaughlin & the Rogues don’t need to reinvent the old to sound fresh — the Milwaukee quintet takes the old-timey crackle of sounds bygone and adopt them and raise them with a similar upbringing that Tom Waits and Nick Cave gave to their own, modern and storied compositions. From the heartfelt and stark twang of “Tonight” to radio fuzz of “Made For You” and the creeped-out piano-pushing on “Pretty Little Girl”, John McLaughlin & the Rogues don’t stick to one black wave for very long; instead, the band floats across the entire spectrum of dark. The band plays Club Anything [807 S. 5th Street] this Friday and SXSW in Austin, Texas, this March. Tune into 91.7 FM WMSE tonight at 8 p.m. to hear the band play songs, both new and old. 91.7 FM on your radio dial or WMSE.org, to stream online. Missed out?
