Los Chicharrons’ Ramon Santana and Morten Varano are being played up as ‘the odd couple’, even after releasing four albums together — no surprise, since their differences are what makes the music. The duo’s dance compositions are filled to the brim and then some with their collective backgrounds, both residential and musical. Both Santana and Varano, DJs and producers, come from jump from opposite ends o the scale, but have managed to find a middle-ground of balance throughout their work together, and on their latest album, Roots of Life, it makes for a playful and deep mix of Afro-inspired electronic music, with the song “Kounandi” kicking things off.
Santana, from the Dominican Republic, relocated to Brooklyn and Queens in his youth, and Varano, from Copenhagen (also a transplant), together bring their backgrounds of beats, classical composition and love of dance music to present a body of work that’s seamless and modern. Listen to “Kounandi”, below.
