Adds Explained: All Tiny Creatures’ ‘Harbors’

All Tiny Creatures

This past week at WMSE, we’ve had the best luck to have two local albums to pick from for our weekly CMJ ‘adds’: All Tiny Creatures’ Harbors [Hometapes] and Heidi Spencer’s Under Streetlight Glow [Bella Union]. Expect to read more about Spencer, tomorrow (as she’s got her album release coming up this weekend). For today, it’s all about Madison/Milwaukee’s prog-pop re-fashioners, All Tiny Creatures, who are currently guilty of craftily embedding their electronic-infused and guitar/percussion-driven songs into our collective ears via their just-pressed album Harbors.

Fronted by Thomas Wincek [guitar/keys/vox] and further powered by Matt Skemp [bass/keys], Ben Derickson [drums] and Andrew Fitzpatrick [guitar/vox], ATC has gathered a well-ranged assemblage of guest vocalists on Harbors to create ever-changing layers and waves, befitting the nature of the album. Washed-out electronics, running guitar lines and airy voices blend to carry the listener through soundscapes previously created and honed by electronic forefather Ulrich Schnauss,  jazz-electro nerds The Sea and Cake and tripped-out beatmakers and label-mates, Bear in Heaven. Elements of Wincek’s and Skemp’s present and past involvement in Volcano Choir and Collections of Colonies of Bees also dive and surface throughout Harbors and those who prefer their music to be full of space and breath won’t want for anything.

Listen to “Glass Bubbles” and “Holography”, below — Ryan Olcott of Mystery Palace guests his vocals for “Glass Bubbles”. All Tiny Creatures will tour for Harbors this spring; tour dates listed below.
