“Just when you thought Montreal was tapped out on its music talent, along comes Little Scream,” Brooklyn Vegan’s JW Byer confessed last fall when Little Scream (Laurel Sprengelmeyer) started generating press for her then-forthcoming album The Golden Record [Secretly Canadian]. Co-produced by co-Canadian and Arcade Fire member Richard Reed Parry, The Golden Record is naturally centered on Sprengelmeyer’s pretty vocals, yet makes her compositions out to be more than just about another pretty voice. Sprengelmeyer displays her prowess on guitar, violin and keyboard with added instrumentation from Parry, Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire), Aaron Dessner (The National), Becky Foon (Silver Mt. Zion) and more lending a satisfying, orchestral depth. Sprengelmeyer’s voice heaves above the more layered moments on the album, reminiscent of PJ Harvey’s strong and sweet tremble while the sparser moments leave her voice wispy and confessional. Listen to “The Heron & the Fox” from The Golden Record in the above video. Listen to Little Scream live, tonight, as she opens for Sharon Van Etten at The Pabst Theater at 8 p.m.
