WMSE Song of the Day (Tune In Turn Up): Mike Watt “Hammering-Castle-Bird-Man”

Mike Watt

Legendary Minutemen bassist Mike Watt may be well into his 50’s, but he’s still reveling in the Minutemen’s credo to ‘jam econo’ and unfold sparse and personal songs that allow himself — and his fans —  a glimpse into his multifaceted personal experiences. His latest release, a concept album entitled Hyphenated-Man is “a mirror busted up in 30 pieces,” per Watt; thirty songs filled with various bits and pieces of what Watt feels is pushing/pulling him about each day. “Hollowed-Out-Man”, “Wheel-Bound-Man” and “Lute-and-Dagger-Man” are just some of Watts relatable identities, and his often sub-two minute compositions lend an even more strong feeling of shift to these songs.

Catch Mike Watt in Milwaukee tomorrow, April 16th,  as he appears at the East Side’s Exclusive Co. [1669 N. Farwell] between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. and later that evening at Shank Hall [1434 N. Farwell] for an 8 p.m. performance with the Missing Men and Milwaukee’s Couch Flambeau.
