WMSE Song of the Day (Tune In Turn Up): Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs “The Whole Day Long”

Holly Golightly is the kind of musician that wins her fans through mere natural appeal — no fancy promotions tactics for this one, who unapologetically admits “I’m proud to say that I don’t think there’s been much development at all, really.” on her most recent release, No Help Coming [Transdreamer Records]. The English native and Georgia resident, along with the irrepressibly macabre Lawyer Dave, takes the listener on a journey that is all at once nostalgic (including covers from Wendell Austin and Bill Anderson) and fresh in spirit. Filled with the air of the truly new-timey and ramshackle odes to characters, attitudes and the like which populate their worlds, their music is tinged with the oddball and dark, the blues-y and scratched and dusted up.  No Help Coming may not be a significant development in Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs’ sound, but this doesn’t make for an less than intriguing listening. Join the duo at Milwaukee’s Mad Planet [533 E. Center]  this Sunday, May 15th for a 9 p.m. show. 21+
