WMSE Song of the Day (Tune In Turn Up): D. Charles Speer & the Helix “Le Grand Cochon”

To go with the countrified theme Jonny Z’s Chicken Shack started earlier today, we’re happier than a pig in…well…let’s just say we’re happy…to continue that and introduce to you a classic, but new,Thrill Jockey-rostered outfit, D. Charles Speer & The Helix. D. Charles Speer (aka Dave Shuford) of the No Neck Blues Band recently released Leaving the Commonwealth, covering plenty of ground on Texas and California psych, Cajun and country. Exclaim says, “It would surely rankle many Nashville residents to know that the best authentic country album so far this year has been made by a bunch of New York City slickers.  But that’s just what Leaving The Commonwealth is... But to rely on some standard rock-crit references, Leaving The Commonwealth would have been the result of the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Velvet Underground spending any time hanging out together.  There’s not much more that any alt-country fan could want.Catch D. Charles Speer & The Helix this Sunday, May 15th, for a show at Frank’s Power Plant [2800 S. Kinnickinnic]. 9:30 p.m. 21+
