words by Brigitte Kiepert
When I heard the Beastie Boys collaborated with Santigold (listen above, or check out the more mellow version, *here*) on their new album, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two [Capitol], I was a bit stunned (if this is news to you at this very moment, aren’t you a bit taken aback?), but this is a very good thing. Their track, “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” is a well-balanced mix of hip hop, reggae and glitchy beats. The saying is old but could never be truer — don’t judge a book by its cover. And in this case, don’t judge the unlikely, and ultimately winning, combination of old school American hip hop and electronic pop.
