A Weekend of Jazz With Okka Fest

Mats Gustafsson

Milwaukeeans can see live free jazz performances in Milwaukee mostly thanks to the fuel behind both the Okka Disk label and The Sugar Maple / Palm Tavern, Bruno Johnson. Johnson, owner of Milwaukee’s craft and specialty beer homes, The Sugar Maple (and Palm Tavern), is a loyal and frequent host to musicians such as Peter Brotzmann and Ken Vandermark via The Sugar Maple’s just-right sized back room. This weekend sees the pinnacle of these occasional performances, with the entire weekend devoted to artists such as Vandermark and the like for another edition of Okka Fest. This year, both national and international musicians will be arriving to Milwaukee to share their music with the city for three days; catch performances by Tim Daisy on drums, Mats Gustafsson on saxophone and Jason¬†Adasiewicz on vibes.

Sponsored by the Milwaukee Free Jazz Society, Okka Fest has become a very visible reminder that Chicago is not the only city in the United States with interest in the more fluidly improvisational form of the jazz genre. A.V. Milwaukee says, “Sugar Maple has become the home for free jazz in the city”, and nothing could be more true. Complete lineup and details for this year’s Okka Fest are below.
