WMSE Song of the Day (Tune In Turn Up): Unknown Mortal Orchestra “Ffunny Ffrends”

We really like this new release (and song) from Fat Possum Records‘ newbies Unknown Mortal Orchestra — it’s an unnerving but comfortable haze of crunchy guitars paired nicely with chilled out crashes from the drums that’s a wee bit Flaming Lips, a wee bit of Javelin and  old-school Television. Head of the Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Ruban Nielson, transferred from New Zealand to Portland, Oregon with his band Mint Chicks and joined up with producer Jake Portrait [bass] and youngster Julien Erlich [drums]. Chris Coplan of Consequence of Sound explained nicely that, “The most impressive and endearing aspect of this album is the overall feel and ambiance it’s created. Sounding like songs ripped from some pirate FM radio of the 1970s, it invokes the feeling of spinning that first piece of dusty, warped vinyl. That kind of cohesive sound, done with the greatest of ease, can’t be found elsewhere.”
