WMSE Song of the Day (Tune In Turn Up): Dengue Fever “Cement Slippers”

Dengue Fever has been burning up both WMSE’s alternative and world charts with their genre-mixing sound, delightfully on full display for their latest, Cannibal Courtship [Concord]. The pairing of Zac Holtzman’s deadpan vocals and Cambodian-born Chhom Nimol’s expressive voice is an unusual take on Nimol’s native country’s  former penchant for psychedelic surf rock.  Modernly, this meeting of the past and present works through a sheer catchiness that is unusual in its reminiscence of the B-52s, its shadowing of the pop qualities of The New Pornographers and its tinge of darkly sweet twee-pop lyricism. It’s a sound that is both lighthearted and heartfelt.
