WMSE Song of the Day (Tune In Turn Up): Battles “Wall Street”

To tie in with WMSE’s DJ Scott Lucey’s earlier write-up on his favorites of 2011 so far,  we decided to feature one of his most recently-released picks, Battles’ latest, Gloss Drop [Warp]. Battles, now minus their oddball, but thrilling former singer, Tyondai Braxton, are doing just fine and then some on Gloss Drop, which features guest vocals from Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino and energetic dance producer Matias Aguayo to make for a complexly pleasing audio ride that is twisty and turn-y thanks to the songwriting prowess and experimental mindsets of drummer John Stanier, guitarist/keyboardist Ian Williams and guitarist/bassist Dave Konopka. Battles is a band that plays best with no boundaries and their extra songwriting freedom has proven Gloss Drop to be one of the most intriguing listens of the summer.
