“I sent a box of our stuff, so there’s something to open up.” guitarist/vocalist Ivan Howard sings on The Rosebuds’ newest, Loud Planes Fly Low [Merge Records]. It’s this line that particularly underlines the emotion of each song on the album, written with the recent experience of divorce weighing in. Band mate and former wife, keyboardist/vocalist Kelly Crisp, relocated to Brooklyn after splitting with Howard not too long after the release of 2008’s Life Like. Howard stayed in North Carolina. What’s left is the couple’s bond in music, which after album number five, sounds stronger than ever. Almost ironically, the pair still capably creates beautiful rockers, tempered by pretty toy pianos and sweet vocals from Crisp. Under the Radar admires, “Surprisingly, Loud Planes Fly Low is neither a therapy album, nor an unfettered mope-fest. The outing is once again filled with retro-leaning rhythms, propelled forward by waves of synths, echoey vocals, and tambourines.” The Rosebuds open for Bon Iver at The Riverside Theater Friday, July 22nd and Saturday, July 23rd.
