Was the Budos Band’s recent brass-filled performance in Cathedral Square Park for WMSE’s Radio Summer Camp not enough to satisfy your outdoor-brass-concert quota this summer? Get another chance to hear some pretty and peppy reverberations straight from Madison with plenty of swing. The Onion’s A.V. Club Madison says, “Madison’s Mama Digdown’s Brass Band has long been a sure bet for a bit of the Big Easy in the cold Midwest, thanks to horn-fueled swing that sounds like it’s being piped in directly from New Orleans. The band’s 2006 disc, Ascona, was recorded live at a jazz festival in Switzerland, and features both well-chosen classics ‘(‘I’ll Fly Away,’ Ray Charles’ ‘I Got A Woman’) and a couple of surprises, like Bobby Brown’s ‘Good Enough.’ The band is out now behind We Make ‘Em Say Ooh, which keeps up the bold rhythms and spicy, funky horns on tune like ‘Mojito’ and “Red Dress.'” The group, in twelve years’ time, has gotten creds from playing hundreds of shows, opening for folks such as Buddy Guy, Dr. John and The Dirty Dozen. See for yourself at tomorrow’s performance for Jazz in the Park (in Cathedral Square Park) this Thursday, August 11th at 6 p.m.
