Milwaukee’s Collections of Colonies of Bees’ just-released album Giving (Hometapes) is a testament to a group whose core members have written and played together for years. Its solid, yet spacious nearly half hour venture through both the atmospheric and the complex is a delight to listen to and is a a pretty perfect audio representation of the band’s live energy. Four songs long (“Vorm”, “Lawn”, “Vorms”, “Lawns”), Giving is straightforward in sound and thoughtfully put together — Jon Mueller’s expressive drumming is on full display and the Bees’ synchronization is natural and for that, all the more enticing. Giving comes off as a bit bittersweet for local fans, with the departure of Mueller and keys player Thomas Wincek, but the energy the two leave with is enough to leave Bees fans excited for what’s to come with its new lineup.
