WMSE Song of the Day (Tune In Turn Up): Tinariwen “Tenere Taqhim Tossam”

Tinariwen creates music that is all about movement — the continuous percussion, its dancing guitarwork and depth-y vocals are inspiring and full of lively spirit, reaching out in understated extroversion. The band’s new album, Tassili [Anti- Records], is literally even more far-reaching than any Tinariwen release to-date, making proper use of western friends in TV On the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone for the song “Tenere Taqhim Tossam”. In the video, above, directed by Patrick Votan, TVOTR sits in with  the ‘desert rockers’ who make a good display of their trademark Tuareg crossover of Mali, Africa-based sounds married to western influences of blues and funk.
