“My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky” is another epic sonic sweep for Swans, a band that has been instilling a lot of awe (and a wee bit of fear) in experimental rock circles for years. “Swans are majestic, beautiful looking creatures. With really ugly temperaments.” Swans’ leader, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Michael Gira, has said in regards to the name for the band that was formed in 1982. Described as severely slowed down and minimalistic metal, Swans’ early material was a punch to the gut and took the ‘No Wave’ output of bands such as Joy Division and Sonic Youth into an even more stately and heavy territory. See Swans tomorrow, September 21st at Turner Hall Ballroom as they play a show alongside Sir Richard Bishop at 8 p.m.
