Reissued: Derek Bailey’s ‘Concert in Milwaukee’

words by Hal Rammel

Fans of British experimental/ improvising guitarist Derek Bailey have been elated this past week with news that the infamous Concert in Milwaukee cassette has been finally reissued on compact disc by Incus Records.  After Derek Bailey’s 1983 performance at Woodland Pattern Book Center (recorded by Thomas Gaudynski), Derek Bailey had cassettes made to take along with him on a tour in Japan.  The tour canceled and almost all the cassettes were damaged by the post office on their way back to England.  Only about 150 survived and Derek sold these off pretty quickly.  It was never reissued. The Concert in Milwaukee tape has been long sought after and whenever I’ve played portions of it on Alternating Currents I always get phone calls and e-mails about where to find copies.  The recording has never been available anywhere until now and Incus has even issued a facsimile cassette copy.

Hal Rammel hosts 91.7 FM WMSE’s Alternating Currents program every Sunday from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
