Leave it to Steve Malkmus to pick the most languishing song on his album for the video. It’s a good call to the musical ethos that Malkmus not only flirted with in his early years, but crafted. The Beck-produced Mirror Traffic [Matador Records] is full of plenty of pep and is a slight weird parallel to said-producer’s own work, early and current. Yet…Malkmus is Malkmus, and he is just who he is, markedly rooted in lo-fi, shoulder-shrugs, discordance and all. His subdued genius is just where it’s at and he keeps it up well, still plugging into and lighting up on that intrigue. “Competing with his younger self is definitely not a priority for Malkmus,” says Pitchfork of the album. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks visit Turner Hall Ballroom this Friday, October 7th at 8 p.m. for an all-ages show.
