WMSE Song of the Day (Tune In Turn Up): The Debo Band “Belomi Benna”

Boston’s Debo Band is a strong voice for Ethiopian pop music in its most classic 1970s beginnings to the present, their energetic compositions even landing the group a stint at a score for the Ethiopian-produced short film Lezare (2009). The ensemble, with fourteen members as a whole, is described by The Boston Herald as “An eclectic mix of players…a sound that bridges cultures…just what Ethiopian pop music did in its golden age.”

Watch the Debo Band at 2010’s Global Union in the video, above, as they perform “Belomi Benna”.

Alverno Presents Debo Band with Fendika (Pitman Theater, 8pm) on Saturday October 22nd.
