With gigs opening for nationals such as Fitz and the Tantrums and The Constellations and local heavy-hitters such as Kings Go Forth and Paul Cebar, Milwaukee’s Herman Astro has come a long way in a short time since their formation in 2009. Lead by Zachary Pluer (vocals/acoustic guitar), Herman Astro showcases a locally-flavored soulful mix of rock and the blues, honing in on horns and funk-based percussion. Cody Calderon (drums), Eric LeMieux (electric guitar), and Adam Dosemagen (bass), alongside Pluer, are set to release their debut LP, Chico, recorded at Milwaukee’s Howl Street Studios, with a release show scheduled for Saturday, December 17th at Mad Planet. The band has invited guest musicians onstage with them for their Chico debut, including a three-piece horn section and backup vocals from Leah Kowaleski of Milwaukee’s Crooked Keys. Check out the preview video for Chico, above, and take a listen to “Tell Me (What I Gotta Do)”, available at www.hermanastro.org. The band will talk to Dori tomorrow at 1 p.m. for WMSE’s Local Lunchbox segment and debut a couple unreleased tracks from their forthcoming album. Listen at 91.7 FM on your radio dial or stream, live (or in the archives) at WMSE.org.
