Today in the WMSE Studios: The Gourds

The Gourds

Kevin “Shinyribs” Russell of Austin, Texas’ The Gourds will be stopping by Andy’s Zero Hour show today at 2 p.m. to play a solo acoustic set, for  a stripped-down and unique take on the usual five-piece’s more pepped-up and shined-up material. Their most-recent release (Old Mad Joy) is full of the band’s signature twanged-up, swing-style of bluegrass and Texas Monthly writes, “Their backwoods appearance and down-and-dirty roots grooves suggest just another redneck party band, but beer-drinking and hell-raising don’t begin to cover all they do. Fronted by oil-and-vinegar singer-songwriters Kevin Russell and Jimmy Smith, the band churns out songs of surprising variety, some hyperliterate, others maddeningly obtuse, and, yes, a few that qualify as beer-drinkers and hell-raisers. The dichotomy suits their hometown Austin fans, but others have had a hard time wrapping their heads around the group….Not this time. Old Mad Joy (Vanguard) is the sound of the Gourds putting their shoulders to the wheel.” Check out a past live performance from the whole band of “Hey Thurman” before tuning  in today to hear some tunes from Russell live on the airwaves of WMSE. 91.7 FM on your radio dial or stream, live at The band plays Shank Hall tonight at 8 p.m. 21+
