WMSE Song of the Day (Tune In, Turn Up): Sharon Van Etten “Serpents”

Sharon Van Etten “Serpents”

With press pointing to the point of adoration for 2010’s Epic, reasons are plenty for Sharon Van Etten’s take on singer/songwriter to be lauded as more striking than most, her expressive vocals layered and wrung out just enough to warrant a step back and a closer listen. For her forthcoming album Tramp (Jagjaguwar Records), Van Etten worked with The National’s Aaron Dessner who contributed slide guitar and  bass and Bryce Dessner on ebo guitar as well as The Walkmen’s Matt Barrick (drums),  and Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner (vocals), among others. “Serpents” is pointing to a point of new directions for Van Etten who is taking the fleshed-out feel of Epic one step further, kicking off with the momentum of a February –  March-long tour.
