A New Alternative for This Week: new (and old) faces in a tried and true genre

‘Alternative’ is something one hears pretty much all the time on WMSE (we play independently-released music from blues, folk, world, classical and jazz musicians), but genre-specifically, typically-labeled ‘alternative music’ (stuff rooted in rock) is the most populated, rotated and upgraded genres on lots of college radio airwaves. We get quite a bit! In light of that, we’re pleased to share with you a few current, interesting listens that are either (sitting as we speak) on the shelves of the WMSE library or are soon on their way. Ease into Damien Jurado’s newest singles(and one of his coziest) from forthcoming album Maraqopa, hear what Jack White’s been up to on his own, check out the soundtrack-crafted tuneage from French duo Air, listen to the heady beats and vocal manipulations of MN’s Polica, as well as a cover of Antony & the Johnsons’ “Spiralling” done up by English traditionalists The Unthanks and a tribute to dance by Wiley from his newest, Evolve or Be Extinct. Enjoy and listen for these and more on the WMSE airwaves!

Damien Jurado “Reel to Reel”

Jack White “Love Interruption”

Air “Seven Stars”

Polica “Wandering Star”

The Unthanks “Spiralling”

Wiley “I’m Skanking”
