Today on WMSE: a Hat’s Off to Merge Records

Tune into WMSE tonight from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. and get a little one-on-one time with the label you love, Merge Records. Tonight’s host of the City Rock Showgram, Brian Jay (sitting in for Rich Mars) will be treating your ears to all things Merge, the label started in 1989 in Durham, North Carolina by Superchunk band mates, Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance. Brian loves Merge Records and plans to showcase his favorites from over the years and highlight an upcoming show WMSE is proud to support.

Hospitality, part of the Merge roster, just released their self-titled album a couple months ago and will be in town this Friday for a show at Stonefly Brewery with Here We Go Magic and a record spin by WMSE’s DJ Dori Zori from The Girlina Show. Trust us, this will be the best and broadest span of sounds if you like everything from rock to pop. Hospitality belongs to the twee-er school of things, but definitely has an edge, thanks to their smart and snappy lyrics. Paired with the frenetic energy of Here We Go Magic, this show is sure to sparkle and pop, a-plenty.

Brian, in the previewing spirit, says, “I’d like to share with our listeners the history and nature of the label as a fairly unique entity in the industry and highlight a lot of the early works of bands like Neutral Milk Hotel, Polvo etc.” and he’s planning (with the help of Merge), to give one listener a chance to get a spot at Friday’s show. Tune in tonight to enjoy and hear more details on the show and for your chance to go on us.
