WMSE and the July Homestretch

Can it be? Is July really approaching its final leg? The collective groan that is heard around Milwaukee and Wisconsin is not just because it’s hot and humid as all get out, but because July is pretty much the pinnacle of all summery things and it’s making its way down the homestretch — Summerfest, fireworks, Bastille Days and Lake Michigan finally being warm enough to swim in (maybe) are all fleeted, fleeting or will fleet.

Before you get too pensive, get out there and make the most of it. August is going to be one breakneck-speed ride as far as WMSE events go, so savor the last sweetly sticky days of July and opt for one of the following:

Jazz in the Park is such a good excuse to relax and enjoy the giant green space of Cathedral Square Park (WMSE’s backyard, literally) and tonight, the stage in the square will play host some pretty amazing local musicians, including Dave Wake of Kings Go Forth and De La Buena, Max Day of the Pueblo Latino Orchestra and De La Buena and Jim Paolo of La Chazz. Put together by the East Town Association, they give the background on these talented individuals who create Milwaukee’s Orquesta Tumbao. “Orquesta Tumbao was formed in 2011 to bring together some of the tremendous Latin Jazz performers on the faculty of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. This all-star ensemble is dedicated to promoting Latin jazz, educating the public about the rich traditions and cultural origins of the music, and delivering high energy performances of classics from the repertoire.”

And because outdoors is the name of this particular game, Sugar Stems fit right in as they play along and make an appearance at Beans & Barley’s Green Market this Saturday at 10 a.m. While one will find sweet local wares like honey, raspberries and more at the weekly market, Sugar Stems are a good contender for trumping those with their high energy pop music. Listen to their latest 7″ at their Bandcamp page and make a stop at Beans to see ’em, live.

Back in 2010, WMSE welcomed Milwaukee’s I’m Not a Pilot to the studios for Local/Live — read all about that, here, and get a rare chance to catch the band in the Great Outdoors for Humboldt Park’s Chill On the Hill this Tuesday at 6 p.m. Ready, set? Go play outside:

July 26 – Jazz in the Park: Orquesta Tumbao (Cathedral Square Park, 5pm)
July 28 – East Side Green Market – Sugar Stems (Beans & Barley Lot, 10am)
July 31 – Chill on the Hill: I’m Not  a Pilot (Humboldt Park Bandshell, 6pm)
