Formed in the winter of 1994, The Exotics (Brandt Zacher, Paul Wall, Jon Ziegler and Don Nelson), quickly became known for their incredibly tight sound, choreographed stage moves and custom band uniforms. After hitting every possible venue in the Milwaukee area, they became a regular act at Lee’s Liquor Lounge in Minneapolis and many venues in Chicago. The Exotics were the featured act at a surf music showcase at SXSW in Austin, Texas. The band has toured the Midwest, the East Coast and Florida, largely due to the success of their 1996 release, Go Go Guitars. In 2005, the Exotics made a featured appearance on the long running public radio program, A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor and played at Chicago Exotica.
2012 will find the Exotics in California with appearances including an outdoor concert on Huntington beach, a featured slot at the annual Surf Guitar 101 convention in Los Alamitos, and most notably, the Tiki Oasis in San Diego, the world’s largest tiki festival. Tune into WMSE tonight at 8 p.m. to hear a sunshine-y dose of classic instrumental surf music in the same vein as The Ventures, The Bel-Aires and more. 91.7 FM on your radio dial in the Milwaukee area or stream live or in the archives at WMSE.org.
