Major Moon, US Male’s debut album, arrived about a month ago and the Milwaukee quartet is making fast work of pointing out that the music is more of a fun outlet than something serious. In a December interview with Milwaukee Magazine, main songwriter Cassidy DW chatted about the project right before the band’s first show for Riverwest Fest. “It’s like the kind of music I’ll play at my job when I’m pissed,” DW explained in that interview, “the stuff that would bring me out of it and cheer me up. Like, an old Yo La Tengo record or the new Yuck record or whatever. Things that were either, at the time, very contemporary or, in hindsight now, are nostalgic of the ’90s alternative and grunge and underground rock.”
US Male’s single “Summer of N64” is an awkward, but lovable hybrid between the 90s nostalgia of Weezer and the slinkiness of Steve Miller’s “The Joker”, instantly memorable for those sing-along qualities. Listen in for yourself, in nostalgic and fun-spirited solidarity, as US Male visit the WMSE studios for a live performance on WMSE’s Local/Live tonight at 8pm.
