Today in the WMSE Studios: Martha Wainwright

Martha Wainwright’s bloodlines are thick with music — her father, Loudon Wainwright III, her (late) mother Kate McGarrigle and brother Rufus Wainwright, each well-known musicians in their own rights.

Growing up in a musical household in Montreal, Martha has often relayed in interviews that she had singing contests with brother Rufus and as the two got older, both made practice into careers with their talents, Martha’s debut, self-titled album arriving in 2005. Her latest release, Come Home to Mama, was released last Fall and features production work by Yuka Honda (Cibo Matto). The album is stark and beautiful, touching on Wainwright’s recent experiences with motherhood, marriage and losing her mother, McGarrigle, to cancer. “Proserpina” was the last song McGarrigle had penned and Martha gives it a heart-wrenching sendoff on her latest album, a true tribute to a mother and musician, both.

Listen in to WMSE today at 4pm as Martha visits WMSE to perform songs from the album live on the air before she visits Shank Hall tonight.

Martha Wainwright plays alongside The Woolridge Brothers at Shank Hall this evening. 8pm, 21+
