Tonight on Local/Live: The New Seven

The New Seven, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, showcases lush vocals and intricate melodies, and was formed in early 2012 by guitarist/vocalist Tony Smith and former mandolin player Jeff Purcell after Smith recovered from a devastating hand injury. The New Seven’s first lineup wasn’t complete until bassist Tim Koehler and vocalist Morgan Montesanto joined the group; after several months, their initial bluegrass sound evolved into an unconventional folk style due to the loss of Purcell. The New Seven found themselves at home once percussionist Nick Lang joined in — they plugged in their electrics and turned up, but held on to the important techniques and concepts that shaped their acoustic sound.
